Nail It!

Okay, so maybe college isn’t for you. You have options. And no, slinging burgers isn’t one of them. Opportunities in the building and construction industry exist right now, with most only requiring a high school diploma or GED. So you can start earning a good paycheck while you’re building towards your future. (Your parents will definitely like that last part – be sure to sprinkle it in!)

HELLO OPPORTUNITY

You might be done with statistics but just bear with us for a quick minute and let’s talk about supply and demand. It’s estimated that by the year 2023, Nevada will hire over 135,000 people in the skilled trades. But the labor work force is getting older and not enough young people are taking their place. Translation – that’s a lot of jobs and not enough people to fill them. In other words, if you start your career in the trades now, you will be in demand.

Start out with money in the bank, not in the hole.

A career in construction offers work right now in the real world, making real money. And most starting positions only require a high school diploma, with some offering on the job training and apprenticeships. How cool is that? Plus, there are resources to make the journey easier, including a number of scholarships and other programs to assist you with your planning.

Did you know that only 3 out of 10 jobs actually require a college degree? And 30% of college freshmen drop out after their first year of college? Let’s be honest, not everyone is cut out to take the traditional college route. And there’s nothing wrong with that. Real options exist for your child to start a career right out of high school, and the fast food industry isn’t one of them. But if they do want to further their education, Nevada has many programs and curriculums in the trades to enhance your child’s career options and earning potential following high school.

It’s time to close the large skills gap in the construction industry. Craft professionals build our roads, schools, hospitals, homes, businesses…all the infrastructure that allow our society to function and thrive. Let’s encourage new generations to consider a career path in the trades – an honest profession that offers many paths to success.

“More than 7.5 million construction industry jobs are projected by 2026”.
